How to Digitally Sign an Email in Windows Live Mail

Solution

This explains the process to digitally sign an email in Windows Live Mail using your SuisseID.  Before starting this process, you must ensure that your SuisseID is properly installed and either your token is inserted into the usb port or that your smartcard is inserted into the smartcard reader.

You should have already configured your Windows Live Mail application to use our SuisseID (Authentication) certificate.

To help you out with this document, all of the steps that need to be followed have been outlined in red.

First Time Users

If this is your first time signing an email with Windows Live Mail, you will need to configure the Sign button so that you can sign emails with ease.  If you already have a Sign button, you can skip this section and continue onward to the next section, Digitally Signing the Email.

  1. Start off by opening a New Message.  In the New Message window, click on the Menu icon found underneath the top right-hand corner of the window.
    Click on the Menu Icon

  2. A drop-down menu will appear.  Select the Customize toolbar option in the drop-down menu.

  3. A new window will appear called the Customize tool bar window.  In this window, you will select Sign from the Available buttons on the left.  Once highlighted, press the top rightward arrow (shown in red) button to move Sign from the left pane to the right pane.
You may then use the bottom two 'up' and 'down' arrows to customize where you want the Sign button to be displayed on your New Message menu.

Digitally Signing the Email

Back in the New Message window, you should see that there is now a Sign button that appears where you specified earlier.  Make sure that your SuisseID is inserted into your computer, and then when you want to digitally sign an email, you must click on this Sign button.  You should see the Sign button depress and a medallion icon will appear near the top right-hand corner.

When the medallion icon is displayed, the message will be digitally signed using your SuisseID when you click the Send button.  You must ensure that your SuisseID stays plugged in during the entire process.

If you change your mind and decide not to digitally sign your message, you can simply click on the Sign button again and the medallion symbol will disappear, causing you to send a normal email.
