Thawte SSL Assistant Instructions – Apache Red Hat Enterprise

This document provides instructions for using the Thawte SSL Assistant on Apache

PLEASE NOTE: The Thawte SSL Assistant is supported on the following Linux platforms:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0 with Apache 2.0
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 with Apache 2.0

*You must have root-level access to install and run this tool.

Using the Thawte SSL Assistant to Generate a CSR on Apache

Step 1: Download the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Download Thawte SSL Assistant for Apache
     
  2. Extract the Thawte_SSLAssistant.tar file.  For example:
    tar -xvf Thawte_SSLAssistant.tar
     
  3. The TAR file contains the following files:
    • sslassistant.sh
    • eula.txt
    • readme.txt

Note: It is highly recommended that you download the Thawte SSL Assistant onto the server you plan to install your certificate on.
 

Step 2: Install the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Please follow the instructions in the readme.txt file to install the Thawte SSL Assistant. 
     

Step 3: Run the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Log in as root and start the script.
    # ./sslassistant.sh

     
  2. You MUST agree to the Thawte Plug-In Software License Agreement before you will be able to proceed further.
    Please note that the Thawte Plug-In Software License Agreement (eula.txt) is located in the TAR file that you downloaded.
     
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to generate your CSR.
    Note: The private key file (.key extension) generated by Thawte SSL Assistant will reside locally in: /root/Symantec/ssl
     
  4. Enter the information you would like to see on your certificate:
    • Organization Name: Enter the organization’s legal name registering for this certificate.
    • Department: Enter the department that will be using this certificate. Note that this field is OPTIONAL.
    • Country: Enter the country where the business is registered.
    • State/Province: Enter the state or province where the business is registered. If your organization is registered in a country that does not have a state/province, you can use the city that the business is registered in. Please DO NOT abbreviate the State of Province name.
    • City: Enter the city where the business is legally registered.
    • Website: Enter the website that will be secured with your certificate. For example, www.example.com.
       
  5. Open the CSR file, copy the text, and paste it into the CSR box on the CSR page within the enrollment flows.




Using the Thawte SSL Assistant to Install a Certificate on Apache

Step 1: Download the Certificate

Method 1:

Thawte will send you the SSL certificate via email.

Using a plain text editor such as Notepad, paste the content of the certificate.

You should then have a text file that looks like.

-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----

[encoded data]

-----END CERTIFICATE-----

Make sure you have 5 dashes to either side of the BEGIN CERTIFICATE and END CERTIFICATE and that no white space, extra line breaks or additional characters have been inadvertently added.

  Method 2:

Download the certificate from Thawte Certificate Center (TCC)

Note:

If you install the certificate received by email, or if you download it from your Thawte Certificate Center (TCC)  account in x.509 format, save it with the extension .txt or .cer.

Step 2: Download the Thawte SSL Assistant
Note: If you have already downloaded and installed the SSL Assistant, please proceed to Step 4
 

  1. Download Thawte SSL Assistant for Apache
     
  2. Extract the Thawte_SSLAssistant.tar file.  For example:
    tar -xvf Thawte_SSLAssistant.tar
     
  3. The TAR file contains the following files:
    • sslassistant.sh
    • eula.txt
    • readme.txt

Note: It is highly recommended that you download the Thawte SSL Assistant onto the server you plan to install your certificate on.

Step 3: Install the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Please follow the instructions in the readme.txt file to install the Thawte SSL Assistant.
     

Step 4: Run the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Log in as root and start the script.
    # ./sslassistant.sh

     
  2. You MUST agree to the Thawte Plug-In Software License Agreement before you will be able to proceed further.
    Please note that the Thawte Plug-In Software License Agreement (eula.txt) is located in the TAR file that you downloaded.
     
  3. Once you have agreed to the terms, follow the onscreen prompts to install your certificate.
