Root domain is not added as part of SAN on issued RapidSSL certificate

Problem

Customer has enrolled for a RapidSSL certificate with a Common Name without 'www', and the domain in SAN extension is without 'www'.

Solution

This is per design:

  1. We always insert the common name in the SAN extension of the certificate
  2. If the common name of the request is with ‘www’, then we add both with and without ‘www’ to the SAN extension
  3. If the common name of the request is without ‘www’, the CN will be added to the SAN extension AS IS; i.e. without ‘www’
  4. If the common name contains sub-domains, ONLY the common name will be added to the SAN extension. For example, www.test.foo.com.
