How to import a personal certificate into Netscape

Problem

Need to import a personal certificate into Netscape.

Solution

Importing a certificate copies the certificate and its associated private key from the secure export file to your browser's secure certificate store.
 
To import your certificate using the Netscape Navigator browser, follow these steps: 

 Netscape 9.x

  1. Click Tools > Options > Advanced > Encryption > View Certificates > Your Certificates
  2. Select the Import.
  3. Browse to a folder and file name for the backup.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Enter the master password for the file .
  6. Click OK > OK
Netscape 8.x
  1. Open a Netscape window.
  2. Click on the menu item "Tools" then "Options".
  3. When the Options window opens click on the "Advanced" icon.
  4. Once the "Options Advanced" window opens scroll down to the "Certificates" section and expand it.
  5. Click on the "Manage Certificates" button.
  6. Once the "Certificate Manager" window opens, click the "Import" button.
  7. Browse to the file you are restoring and click "Open"
  8. You will then be asked to enter your Netscape Master Password. If you have not created a Netscape Master Password you will be ask to create one (Make sure you remember this password as you will need it to make changes to your Netscape browser, or import other certificates).
  9. You will then be asked to enter the password used to encrypt the certificate you are importing.
  10. You should see a message that says "Successfully restored your security certificate(s)"
 
Netscape 6.x and 7.x
  1. From the menu bar, select Edit > Preferences.
  2. Double-click the Privacy and Security category.
  3. Click the Certificates category.
  4. Click Manage Certificates.
  5. Click Import.
  6. Specify the name and location of the export file and then click Open.
  7. Type the master password for the Software Security Device and then click OK.
  8. Type the password that you specified while exporting the certificate and then click OK. You cannot import the certificate without this password.
  9. A message confirms that the import procedure was successful. Click OK.
Netscape 4.7x and 4.8x 
  1. Click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the browser window.
  2. Under Certificates, click the Yours link.
  3. Click Import a Certificate.
  4. Type the password for the Communicator Certificate database and then click OK.
  5. Specify the name of the file and folder that holds the exported certificate file and click Open. If you do not see your certificate, select All Files under Files of Type.
  6. Type the password that you specified while exporting the certificate and then click OK. You cannot import the certificate without this password.
  7. A message confirms that the import procedure was successful. Click OK
     
Note: When you are moving a personal certificate from one computer to use on a new computer, you will need the intermediate and root certificates for that personal certificate to function properly.  Do not assume these are exported, use the following links to install them on each computer you import the certificates to:
