How to export a personal certificate from the OS 10.x Mac keychain

Problem

Need to export a personal certificate from a Mac for purposes of backing up or use on another machine.

Solution

To export certificates on OS 10.x:
  1. Select the items you want to export in the Keychain Access window.
These items will be your personal certificates with your name for ECA certificates or "persona not validated" for our Digital ID product.

  2. Choose File > Export Items.

If the Export Items menu is dimmed, then at least one of the selected items can’t be exported.

  3. Select a location to save your keychain items, then choose a file type from the File Format pop-up menu.

  4. Click Save.

  5. Enter a password.

The password is required to access the exported keychain items when you import them on another computer. Some exported items, such as public keys, don’t require a password.
