How to export a personal certificate used on Mozilla Firefox

Problem

Need to export a certificate used on Mozilla Firefox to, backup certificates or use them in another application.

Solution

For Firefox 3.4 and newer:

1. Open Firefox.
2. Click The Sandwich Button    > Options (gear icon) > Advanced (wizard hat) > Certificates tab > View Certificates button > Your certificates tab.
3. In the List of certificates, find the certificate you wish to import.

  • For Digital ID Certificates - The certificate name will be 'persona not validated' and be under the "Symantec Corporation" drop down menu.
  • For ECA Certificates - The certificate name will be your name and be under the "US Government" drop down menu.

4. Select the certificate(s) you want to export and click Backup.  You may also choose backup all to backup all certificates in the your certificates tab.
5. Select the location to save the certificate (with extension *.p12), type a name for your certificate and click Save.  If the "*.p12" extension isn’t an option, you can only export a public key.  See this article for an explanation of the difference.  If you have selected multiple certificates, you may choose to export one at a time to get the *.p12 extension on the most certificates you can.
6. Enter the certificate backup password, retype it and click OK.
